Love a Good Haunt

Tunnelton Tunnel

Tunnelton Tunnel - DiscoverIndiana.org

I know it’s not Halloween yet, but I love a good haunt. Some biker buddies told me about the Tunnelton Tunnel. The tunnel, built in 1857 on a CSX Railroad line, is over a mile long (pitch black, you’ll need a flashlight). It is located approximately three miles southeast of Tunnelton on River Road. Tunnelton is about 45 minutes from Brownstown – see Change of Color blog.

Here’s the Haunt: The night watchman, Henry Dixon, was murdered in the tunnel. And he doesn’t wait till Halloween to haunt, some have reported ghostly activity in the tunnel year-round. Get the in depth story here.

If you dare to go, be careful it’s still an active railroad!!

  1. Nate,

This is in fact a very fun spot to ride to (especially with the back roads it takes to get there) but just be aware if you go on this trip to try and do it late at night and watch for police as you will without doubt be arrested for trespassing. The county and state police put a strict enforcement on this law here at the tunnel due to the amount of injuries and deaths that have resulted from incompetent drunks that have played around in the tunnel while a train came through. The real rush comes from tucking tight inside one of the cubby holes while a train passes through as the suction within the tunnel becomes quite powerful.
